Body Piercing Care

The following piercing jewelry care information is strictly advisory and you should consult your physician for care instructions. Should irritation or infection occur, consult your physician.
Navel Piercing
- Clean your belly button 2 times daily (no more, no less) with antibacterial soap. Before cleaning, use a cu-tip soaked in warm water to gently remove any crust that may have formed around the ring.
- In addition to regular cleanings, salt-water soaks work well to promote healing. You can buy non-iodized sea salt and put about 1/2 tsp in 1/4 cup of cooled boiled water. Put this in a shot glass or small medicinal cup and bend over. Place it over your navel, lie down and kill 15 minutes. This helps get rid of any pending infections.
- Other than for cleanings and salt water soaks, leave your piercing alone. Do not move your navel jewelry around. If you want to see it, look in a mirror.
- Avoid swimming pools and spas. If you must, be sure to clean your navel immediately afterwards with antibacterial soap.
- Lavender oil and tea tree oil may help speed healing. To be sure that you are using the essential oils appropriately, consult your piercing professional before using them.
- Wear a waterproof bandage over a new (up to six months) piercing when swimming to avoid bacterial contamination.
- Avoid using laundry detergents that contain stain fighting enzymes on clothing that will come into direct contact with the piercing. The enzymes can impede healing.
- Don’t touch your new belly button piercing with dirty hands.
- Don’t let other people touch it… or lick it.
- Replace your belly button piercing jewelry only after your piercing has completely healed (usually 6 months to a year).
- When you are ready to replace your belly button ring, select a quality piece of jewelry the does not contain nickel to avoid a possible allergic reaction. You can find a great selection of nickel-free gold belly rings at AlluringBody.
Although the belly button piercing is one of the most popular piercings it can be one of the most difficult to heal. It can take anywhere from 6 months to a year to heal. Curved barbells should be used to wear initially after the piercing as they allow for the safest and fastest healing. Wearing tight waistbands or frequent activity involving bending at the waist can prolong healing time. The pressure of waistbands can force the ring to one side causing the piercing to heal crookedly and scar. Too much pressure can cause the piercing to migrate or reject completely.
Oral Piercing (Tongue, cheek, lip, labret)
Many piercing locations involve the mouth and should be considered oral piercings. These include any piercing that has an opening inside the mouth.
- Use an alcohol free mouthwash to rinse your mouth 4-5 times daily for 30-60 seconds, including after meals and at bedtimes
- To clean the outside of the piercing, use sea salt soaks 2-3 times daily and wash with mild anti-microbial soap no more than twice a day.
- Do not touch the piercing or jewelry except for cleaning.
- Always wash your hands with antibacterial soap before touching the piercing or jewelry.
- Dry with disposable paper products rather than a towel or cloth which can harbor germs and bacteria.
- Let small ice chips dissolve in the mouth to help reduce swelling.
- Use ibuprofen or another non-steroidal anti-inflammatory for swelling if needed.
- Avoid tobacco, alcohol, large amounts of caffeine, oral sexual contact (including French kissing), chewing gum and playing with jewelry during healing.
- Avoid overly spicy, hot, salty or acidic foods for a few days.
- Cold drinks can help soothe and reduce swelling during the healing.
- The original jewelry should be replaced with shorter jewelry after the swelling has reduced. See your piercer for this change, as it usually will be during the healing period.
Cartilage Piercing
Next to the navel, piercings to the upper ear cartilage take the longest to heal. Healing times can vary from two months to a year. Cleaning the piercing carefully and caring for it should become part of your daily routine.
- Clean twice daily with mild, antibacterial soap
- Avoid handling the piercing outside of cleaning to reduce the chances for infection.
- Use a cotton ball, gauze square or other disposable product to apply sea salt soaks and to clean the piercing. Don’t use washcloths or face cloths, as they can harbor bacteria.
- Ibuprofen can be used for discomfort or swelling.
- If there is excessive swelling or signs of infection, see your piercing professional and your doctor.
- Change bedding (pillowcases) frequently. You can use the ‘t-shirt trick’ recommended by many piercers. Slip a clean t-shirt over the pillow before bed. The next night, turn the t-shirt inside out. One t-shirt provides four clean surfaces for sleeping.
Nose Piercings
Nasal piercing is popular throughout the world and has been throughout history. All the usual rules of aftercare apply, including:
- Clean the piercing and jewelry twice daily using a cotton swab, gauze pad or other disposable product and a mild anti-bacterial soap
- Do not touch or play with the jewelry. It will damage the tissue and delay healing.
- Salt soaks can help promote healing and reduce swelling in the early days.
- Ibuprofen will help reduce pain and swelling if needed.
- Ice and cold compresses can help reduce swelling if needed.
- Pat- don’t rub- your face dry to avoid catching and pulling on the piercing jewelry.
- Do not remove the jewelry for more than a day at a time, and not at all until it is fully healed.
Typical Healing Times for Body Piercings
Every piercing is different, just as every body is different, but most piercing pros agree on standard healing times for different parts of the body. The chart is below, but you may have some questions about the length of time it takes to heal a piercing. For instance – why does it take so much longer to heal a navel or ear cartilage piercing than it does to heal an earlobe piercing?
Believe it or not, one of the biggest factors is how much blood flows to the area. The more blood vessels and ‘vascular activity’, the faster the area will heal. Thus, ear lobes which have quite a few blood vessels in them, heal in 4-8 weeks. But the cartilaginous part of the ear along the outer rim, which has very little blood flow, can take up to a year to heal completely.
Healing Times
| Body Part | Time to Heal Completely |
|---|---|
| Ear lobe | 6-8 weeks |
| Ear cartilage | 4 months to a year |
| Eyebrow | 6-8 weeks |
| Nasal septum | 6-8 months |
| Nostril | 2-4 weeks |
| Lip | 2-3 months |
| Tongue | 4 weeks |
| Nipple | 3 to 6 months |
| Navel | 4 months to a year |
These healing times are not exact, and will be affected by how well you care for your piercing as it heals, of course. Infection and migration may happen. Be sure to follow all aftercare instructions given by your healing professional.
Possible Risks
Like anything in life, piercing your navel or any other part of your body carries some risks with it. You are deliberately opening a wound in your body, and forcing it to heal into a fistula. Before a professional piercer will agree to pierce your navel – or any other part of your body, he or she should, at the very least, give you a sheet detailing the risks involved in a body piercing. A truly conscientious piercer will discuss the risks with you to be sure that you understand them. In general, though, the risks of a body piercing include:
- Infection at the site of the piercing
- Systemic infection arising from the piercing (That’s an infection that’s spread through your system in your blood or through other glands.)
- Infective endocarditis is a particularly nasty infection that affects your heart. It’s very rare, but very serious – it can kill you. If you have a pre-existing heart condition or have ever had surgery to repair a heart condition, you have a higher risk of developing infective endocarditis.
- Scars and/or keloids at the piercing site
- Jewelry migrating – pushing its way out of the skin – can leave nasty scars as well as reopen the original wound
- Blood borne diseases are a risk any time that the skin is punctured. If the equipment used to do your piercing has been in contact with the bodily fluids of an infected person, you run the risk of contracting hepatitis C, hepatitis B, tuberculosis, tetanus and HIV, the virus that causes AIDS.
- Allergic reactions to the metal in jewelry is not uncommon. The symptoms of an allergic reaction can range from mildly irritating to life threatening.
You can reduce the likelihood of many of these risks by taking the time to research the piercing studio where you will be pierced, and paying a visit to your doctor in advance. Some precautions that may help you decrease the above risks include:
- Get a tetanus shot from your doctor if you haven’t had one in the last ten years.
- If you have diabetes, a heart condition or any condition that impedes healing or predisposes you to infections, ask your doctor about prophylactic (preventive) antibiotics before your piercing date.
- NEVER attempt to pierce any part of your body yourself, or have a friend do it for you. A reputable professional piercing studio will have the equipment to properly sterilize any equipment and materials that come in contact with your body. That’s vital to avoid blood borne diseases, and will help reduce the chances of other infections as well.
- Follow the aftercare instructions you receive to the letter.
- Don’t handle your piercing or jewelry with your bare hands. If you must, then wash your hands thoroughly with antibiotic soap first.
- Avoid wearing clothing that irritates the piercing site. With navel piercings, it’s a good idea not to wear clothing with a waistband that presses against it.
- Remember that your piercing is not completely healed for up to a year after you have it pierced. Contact your doctor at any sign of infection.

I just got my belly button pierced almost two weeks ago, its still red and it KINDA still hurts, but for the most part, its fine. It does itch once in a while though. I love this piercing! I got my belly button pierced today. i love it!!!! it’s kinda bloody, but i take good care of it… i’m so tempted to play with it but 1) it hurts 2) I dont want it to get infected. I’m Happy its not red and not that sore unless i bend down….. but im worried it will get infected because i touched it a couple of times before i had this advise, i wont be touching it again anytime soon thats for sure

I got my belly-button pierced over a year ago, and about 3 weeks after I got it pierced, my little brother snatched it and the piercing moved, so now it’s not aligned.
Now, there’s a scar from where it was originally pierced. (it’s not too bad)
I just want to get rid of it…Is there a way to heal it and can I center it again?
E-mail me at this account if you have any suggestions anyone: dezdog93@yahoo.com

I GOT MY BELLY BUTTON PIERCED 2DAYS AGO IT DIDNT HURT IT FELT LIKE A PINCH ITS NOT SWOLLEN IM JUST SO EXCITED
honestly, i think some of the teenage girls that post here are being babies. it doesnt hurt. the clamps are what hurt. for the girl that has a scar, if the jewlery isnt already out, take it out. it wont hurt to get it redone. mine got ripped out a month after i got it done and i waited almost a year, but i got it redone yesterday, he had to go under the scar but it wasnt bad. (then again, i have tattoos on my feet, so i can handle just about anything)
i got my tounge peirced bout 4hours ago. it killed me but i kept sucking ice cubes and its fine now
relly happy with it
I got my naval pierced friday, which was 2days ago.. I luv the way it looks!!! I always was interested in body art n piercings. I love all my tats n my naval piercings and none of them hurt. No swelling or no red irritation! It was all worth it to wait til I was 18!!
so I spontaneously decided to get my navel piercing done on April fools day which was kind of a bad idea because no one believed me at first haha … but it’s awesome and I’m in love with how it looks!! i’ve got no regrets at all and you might think it’s going to hurt because of the hype before you get one but all it feels like is just a very hard pinch and it’s over in no time. plus anyway the results are fantastic! the only thing that sucks is you can’t bend down or stretch or sleep on your sides for a week or so but I’m sure I’ll survive
… and my rents don’t know oops
i ave got my belly pierced for 4 months now an it is takin for ever to heal. i am very worried about it because i didn’t know how to take care of it till now. i had change my belly ring, clean my piercing with rubbing alcohol, wore tight waistband shorts, twist the ring and push it up and down, play with it and take out the ring for a day or 2 sometimes.most of the times when i force the belly ring in, blood and a yellow substance appear, it really hurts!!!!!!!!! i believe mine is infected.around my piercing has become dark but it still looks good when i am wearing the ring.i love my piercing still. IT’S THE BEST!!!!!!!!!!!!
just got mine belly button peirced today..it looks amazing i absolutely love it….i have wanted this since i was 16 now im 21 i finally went and done it…..doesnt hurt at all just a pinch and its over.it does hurt if u move in a certain way or if ur top rubs against it…im using saline solution to clean mine……im just sooooo super EXCITED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I will tell new people that have navel piercings, during the first few months do not overwash it or care for it, since it may help you get an infection. I was unlucky got cellulitis, which is dangerous if you don’t check it. I catch it in time and just make sure you keep an eye on the discharge coming out of your piercing making sure its yellow, clear or white. Any other color such as black, gray or green is bad and you should see the doctor ASAP.
Other than that information I just gave, navel piercings don’t hurt at all during the piercing but you will hate the next week or so like Nicole said above. I love my piercing and it was well-worth the money!
I just got my belly pierced yesterday..it did not hurt at all !! it was just like a 2 second hard pinch. it was all worth it the only bad thing is that it hurts to bend, move around my stomach or lay on it..but i am glad with my results. make sure you don’t touch it too much it will get infected..
I got mine done on tuesday. I was kidding around with my friends about getting it and before you know it i was signing the papers and paying to get it done lol i also convinced my friend to get it too
the place was really clean and well lit which is VERY important!!!! I love it…i gotta make sure not to touch it tho. did it hurt? yes but only for a second. and if done correctly it should be pireced with an individually wrapped striaight sterile needle not the ring to answer kaliahs question. But im happy i did it
i got my belly pierced today and one thing, i freaking love it… i think it looks gorgeous… didn’t hurt one bit at all and i swear it didn’t. i closed my eyes for about 10 seconds and opened them again and i had a needle in me… no pain what so ever… quickly shut my eyes again and five seconds later it was in, this beautiful pink and silver stud with a tanned belly looks great by the way. im not scared of infection as i am not playing around with it just eyes only and cleaning it very well… and there has been no bleeding or puss or anything like that. i cant wait for it to heal… also mine doesnt hurt when i bend down or anything, i just think it looks spiffing…
if you are wondering weather or not to get it, i say if you like it you get it and take good care of it, you dont wanna be messing around with this type of thing seriously it could harm you badly, and besides whats a nice belly with redness and puss..? mmm so yeah looks great and feels great and taking great care of it!!! GO.. GET IT DONE.. SMILE.. LOOK.. CLEAN.. HEAL.. WOOOOLAAAA
adios chicas x x x maia x x x

i had my belly ring in for 13 days. its healing fast with no problems besides some pus coming out, its part of the healing process. i love it! i been showing it off and even bought 4 new rings already. but im not going to change them until i stop having pain and can easily move it. it’s been moving itself without any pain but i want to make sure because i been wanting it a long time and finally got it. so i dont want any problems. o yea! IT DIDNT HURT lol. (p.s. the clamps take away the pain of the needle)
i got my navel pierced 3 days ago and its really swollen because of this i think it might be starting to migrate. The skin in between isnt thin but there is an indentation along where the bar is. The piercing doesn’t hardly hurt at all but its too small and doesnt leave enough room to breathe. I know you’re supposed to to wait to change it but given the circumstances should i change the ring and put a longer one in or what exactly should i do?
i got my tongue done yesterday, horizontally… Now i have it pierced both ways and ive got to say. it hurts much more sideways than vertically, i gotta hear some tips from someone to ease this pain before i go fucking crazy, i cant eat, my lips are chapped, i cant close my mouth all the way, But it still looks really good =)
I’m getting my naval done in a couple weeks. I’m kind of scared. I’m scared of like what if i jump on someone’s back and it like gets caught on something. or like when I’m taking my clothes off….i dunno…the comments on here make it seem like 50/50 itll hurt or not..my friends got it done last year and said it hurt a lot.so im kind of scared.ive had my lip done and that didnt hurt. but im scared about my belly.
i think myaa should get a gold star, what a brave soul!!!! not!!! everyone has different pain thresholds, silly person arent you!!!! who cares if you have your feet tattoo and now you can handle anything!!!
Anyway i have piercings and tattoos and i love them… not first of all cuz i get impatient with the healing time!!
hi i just got my naval pierced 2 days ago and its red at the top but not at the bottom and some crusty s and well i had a scar from the previous one and the piercer went threw it and it hurt!!! but other than that when he first started it didn’t. i was wondering are u supposed to feel the ring threw ur skin a little?
Hey, another one of the navel piercers here.
This was my 5th piercing, and so far the one with the least problems. I have both lobes pierced, and two cartillages in my right ear. The ones in my ear were the most difficult to heal because of being a side sleeper, but I found that using my arm as a pillow helped.
A friend and I both got piercings done July 18th, her, lobes, me, my navel. The navel did hurt, but its a bearable pain that for me was over as soon as the barbel was in. I’ve done the salt-water washes 3+ times a day and have had no problems. I play hockey, practice martial arts, go out dancing and clubbing, and just clean it after any activity. No soreness or redness, some people thought it was at least a year old!!!
Listen to your piercer in regards to care, and NEVER be afraid to go back to them with any questions or concerns. Believe me, they want it to be as successful for you as it is for them. Good business and all that. Good luck!
PS!
Before you switch you jewellery out, go to your piercer. If it isn’t healed, and you try switching it, you can tear it and it’ll take longer to heal/get infected/scar.

I pierced my navel yesterday on september 08…at first i was soo nervous i didntt know what to expect. Then the guy told me on the count of three so he counted to three and pushed the needle up my navel. I felt a pinching sensation. I wanted to curse. but i like the way it looks.
Hi Kitty,
I wouldn’t use a dishwashing detergent. You really need a gentle soap and don’t over clean it. Hope that helps.

Okay, so I got my navel pierced yesterday with my mother and sister (who almost chickened out and had a panic attack afterwards, but she’s horrified of needles, so it’s normal for her.) I’ve been cleaning it off with saline (which is what my piercer said to do) and he also told me that I should move it slightly to avoid it getting stuck in place. Is this wrong? I don’t know if I should keep moving it or not. Every time I do, I see a little ring of blood around the top hole, so I’m deciding not to. Wouldn’t this ruin our healing process? I’ll be sure to tell my sister and mother to not twist it, no matter what our piercer and my brother (who has everything on his ears except an industrial and that one that’s on the part inside your ear, plus his eyebrow, tongue and nipples pierced) say. Although, I might be leaning toward what my brother says.. help?
i got my belly pierced on friday; i wasnt sure how to care for it properly until now
thank-you so much for this advice it really helps. For anyone that is thinking about getting it done, its worth it and mine didnt hurt when i got it done
thanks again
I got my belly button pierced on September 28,2010…and i was wondering if i can change the jewelry after having it done for two weeks?
I’m 14, and I got my belly button pierced today. Basically, all that happened was my mother (or any legal guardian) had to fill out a form, then the piercer took me into a room and marked the place he was piercing with ink on a toothpick (sounds charming, right?). Then I sat on this chair that he adjust so i was lying down and I couldn’t see what he was doing. He then got a clamp and aligned it on my belly. Then he put a needle through, and it was over in about 5-7 seconds. It didn’t hurt at the time, but afterwards it began to sting and ache a little. I used the cleaning solution he gave me about 3 and a half hours after i got it done. and I soaked a few sheets of paper towel in warm salty (sea-salt) water, and soaked it on my stomach. this reduced the swelling and removed some of the pain. I think anyone who thinks about getting this piercing definitely should go through with it, cause after all, it’s worth it
xo
Well I got my navel and both nipples pierced a little over a week ago. So far so good! My nipples are fine, but my belly ring is a little red and swollen with a little pus. I clean them both every day while I’m in the shower, and I also turn them. I was instructed by my piercer to put Neosporin on my piercings twice a day for 10 days, but everything I read online instructs not to… I only have 3 days left of that, so I’m just gonna finish them up, but after that I’m gonna try the sea salt soak. I also have tea tree oil which I LOVE, so I might try that too.
It didn’t hurt at all when he did my navel, but when he did my nipples it HURRT! Lol! The first one hurt less than the second, but I think that’s because I knew what was coming. I kept mine covered with band aides for 3 days and they feel wonderful! Very sensitive (I mean that in a good way ;D). My husband thinks they are all very sexy as do I, and I can’t wait to change them out. Right now I have hoops in all 3, which is nice because the first time I got my navel pierced I had one of those bar bell ones and my piercing kept “swallowing” it and I had to keep retrieving it every morning… I’m a stomach sleeper :/. Since it’s a hoop, there’s nothing to swallow, so if 5 months it should be healed and ready for something a bit sexier than a boring silver hoop.
I think if you can take a tattoo you can take a piercing… I have both.
WARNING: ONCE YOU START THE MODS IT’S HARD TO STOP!! I’M ALREADY PLOTTING ON MY NEXT TWO!!!
Hi I want to get my cartilage pierced but I’m a diver so I’m in the water almost every day year round. Will that make a difference? The pool is at a college university so its clean, unlike many highschool or public pools. If anyone has advice that’d be great!
i had my navel done about 5x. all of which were ALL done by a professional. none stayed. the first, the guy didn’t put the ball on tight and it came out in my sleep and was too closed for an attempt to replace it, the second was too shallow, the 3rd was off center by almost and 1/8 of an inch, the 4th was ripped out the next day, the 5th never healed and eventually pushed out after 2yrs. i finally got tired of it and bought ths supplies myself and it’s perfect (other than the scars from the failed piercings) it’s healed nicely, never got red or sore, and it’s perfectly center! i hate that i spent money on 5 fails but it was worth the money the last time. plus the fact that i used to date a tattooist helped. (he did my tongue piercing and it was healed in a month or less)
