Body Piercing Care

The following piercing jewelry care information is strictly advisory and you should consult your physician for care instructions. Should irritation or infection occur, consult your physician.

Navel Piercing

  • Clean your belly button 2 times daily (no more, no less) with antibacterial soap. Before cleaning, use a cu-tip soaked in warm water to gently remove any crust that may have formed around the ring.
  • In addition to regular cleanings, salt-water soaks work well to promote healing. You can buy non-iodized sea salt and put about 1/2 tsp in 1/4 cup of cooled boiled water. Put this in a shot glass or small medicinal cup and bend over. Place it over your navel, lie down and kill 15 minutes. This helps get rid of any pending infections.
  • Other than for cleanings and salt water soaks, leave your piercing alone. Do not move your navel jewelry around. If you want to see it, look in a mirror.
  • Avoid swimming pools and spas. If you must, be sure to clean your navel immediately afterwards with antibacterial soap.
  • Lavender oil and tea tree oil may help speed healing. To be sure that you are using the essential oils appropriately, consult your piercing professional before using them.
  • Wear a waterproof bandage over a new (up to six months) piercing when swimming to avoid bacterial contamination.
  • Avoid using laundry detergents that contain stain fighting enzymes on clothing that will come into direct contact with the piercing. The enzymes can impede healing.
  • Don’t touch your new belly button piercing with dirty hands.
  • Don’t let other people touch it… or lick it.
  • Replace your belly button piercing jewelry only after your piercing has completely healed (usually 6 months to a year).
  • When you are ready to replace your belly button ring, select a quality piece of jewelry the does not contain nickel to avoid a possible allergic reaction. You can find a great selection of nickel-free gold belly rings at AlluringBody.

Although the belly button piercing is one of the most popular piercings it can be one of the most difficult to heal. It can take anywhere from 6 months to a year to heal. Curved barbells should be used to wear initially after the piercing as they allow for the safest and fastest healing. Wearing tight waistbands or frequent activity involving bending at the waist can prolong healing time. The pressure of waistbands can force the ring to one side causing the piercing to heal crookedly and scar. Too much pressure can cause the piercing to migrate or reject completely.

Oral Piercing (Tongue, cheek, lip, labret)

Many piercing locations involve the mouth and should be considered oral piercings. These include any piercing that has an opening inside the mouth.

  • Use an alcohol free mouthwash to rinse your mouth 4-5 times daily for 30-60 seconds, including after meals and at bedtimes
  • To clean the outside of the piercing, use sea salt soaks 2-3 times daily and wash with mild anti-microbial soap no more than twice a day.
  • Do not touch the piercing or jewelry except for cleaning.
  • Always wash your hands with antibacterial soap before touching the piercing or jewelry.
  • Dry with disposable paper products rather than a towel or cloth which can harbor germs and bacteria.
  • Let small ice chips dissolve in the mouth to help reduce swelling.
  • Use ibuprofen or another non-steroidal anti-inflammatory for swelling if needed.
  • Avoid tobacco, alcohol, large amounts of caffeine, oral sexual contact (including French kissing), chewing gum and playing with jewelry during healing.
  • Avoid overly spicy, hot, salty or acidic foods for a few days.
  • Cold drinks can help soothe and reduce swelling during the healing.
  • The original jewelry should be replaced with shorter jewelry after the swelling has reduced. See your piercer for this change, as it usually will be during the healing period.

Cartilage Piercing

Next to the navel, piercings to the upper ear cartilage take the longest to heal. Healing times can vary from two months to a year. Cleaning the piercing carefully and caring for it should become part of your daily routine.

  • Clean twice daily with mild, antibacterial soap
  • Avoid handling the piercing outside of cleaning to reduce the chances for infection.
  • Use a cotton ball, gauze square or other disposable product to apply sea salt soaks and to clean the piercing. Don’t use washcloths or face cloths, as they can harbor bacteria.
  • Ibuprofen can be used for discomfort or swelling.
  • If there is excessive swelling or signs of infection, see your piercing professional and your doctor.
  • Change bedding (pillowcases) frequently. You can use the ‘t-shirt trick’ recommended by many piercers. Slip a clean t-shirt over the pillow before bed. The next night, turn the t-shirt inside out. One t-shirt provides four clean surfaces for sleeping.

Nose Piercings

Nasal piercing is popular throughout the world and has been throughout history. All the usual rules of aftercare apply, including:

  • Clean the piercing and jewelry twice daily using a cotton swab, gauze pad or other disposable product and a mild anti-bacterial soap
  • Do not touch or play with the jewelry. It will damage the tissue and delay healing.
  • Salt soaks can help promote healing and reduce swelling in the early days.
  • Ibuprofen will help reduce pain and swelling if needed.
  • Ice and cold compresses can help reduce swelling if needed.
  • Pat- don’t rub- your face dry to avoid catching and pulling on the piercing jewelry.
  • Do not remove the jewelry for more than a day at a time, and not at all until it is fully healed.

Typical Healing Times for Body Piercings

Every piercing is different, just as every body is different, but most piercing pros agree on standard healing times for different parts of the body. The chart is below, but you may have some questions about the length of time it takes to heal a piercing. For instance – why does it take so much longer to heal a navel or ear cartilage piercing than it does to heal an earlobe piercing?

Believe it or not, one of the biggest factors is how much blood flows to the area. The more blood vessels and ‘vascular activity’, the faster the area will heal. Thus, ear lobes which have quite a few blood vessels in them, heal in 4-8 weeks. But the cartilaginous part of the ear along the outer rim, which has very little blood flow, can take up to a year to heal completely.

Healing Times

Body Part Time to Heal Completely
Ear lobe 6-8 weeks
Ear cartilage 4 months to a year
Eyebrow 6-8 weeks
Nasal septum 6-8 months
Nostril 2-4 weeks
Lip 2-3 months
Tongue 4 weeks
Nipple 3 to 6 months
Navel 4 months to a year

These healing times are not exact, and will be affected by how well you care for your piercing as it heals, of course. Infection and migration may happen. Be sure to follow all aftercare instructions given by your healing professional.

Possible Risks

Like anything in life, piercing your navel or any other part of your body carries some risks with it. You are deliberately opening a wound in your body, and forcing it to heal into a fistula. Before a professional piercer will agree to pierce your navel – or any other part of your body, he or she should, at the very least, give you a sheet detailing the risks involved in a body piercing. A truly conscientious piercer will discuss the risks with you to be sure that you understand them. In general, though, the risks of a body piercing include:

  • Infection at the site of the piercing
  • Systemic infection arising from the piercing (That’s an infection that’s spread through your system in your blood or through other glands.)
  • Infective endocarditis is a particularly nasty infection that affects your heart. It’s very rare, but very serious – it can kill you. If you have a pre-existing heart condition or have ever had surgery to repair a heart condition, you have a higher risk of developing infective endocarditis.
  • Scars and/or keloids at the piercing site
  • Jewelry migrating – pushing its way out of the skin – can leave nasty scars as well as reopen the original wound
  • Blood borne diseases are a risk any time that the skin is punctured. If the equipment used to do your piercing has been in contact with the bodily fluids of an infected person, you run the risk of contracting hepatitis C, hepatitis B, tuberculosis, tetanus and HIV, the virus that causes AIDS.
  • Allergic reactions to the metal in jewelry is not uncommon. The symptoms of an allergic reaction can range from mildly irritating to life threatening.

You can reduce the likelihood of many of these risks by taking the time to research the piercing studio where you will be pierced, and paying a visit to your doctor in advance. Some precautions that may help you decrease the above risks include:

  • Get a tetanus shot from your doctor if you haven’t had one in the last ten years.
  • If you have diabetes, a heart condition or any condition that impedes healing or predisposes you to infections, ask your doctor about prophylactic (preventive) antibiotics before your piercing date.
  • NEVER attempt to pierce any part of your body yourself, or have a friend do it for you. A reputable professional piercing studio will have the equipment to properly sterilize any equipment and materials that come in contact with your body. That’s vital to avoid blood borne diseases, and will help reduce the chances of other infections as well.
  • Follow the aftercare instructions you receive to the letter.
  • Don’t handle your piercing or jewelry with your bare hands. If you must, then wash your hands thoroughly with antibiotic soap first.
  • Avoid wearing clothing that irritates the piercing site. With navel piercings, it’s a good idea not to wear clothing with a waistband that presses against it.
  • Remember that your piercing is not completely healed for up to a year after you have it pierced. Contact your doctor at any sign of infection.

I had my belly button pierced 4 days ago. Their was little to no pain. I am 17 years old and went to a local place. It only took a minute. I was very happy and i was scared their would be pain. He told me to take a deep breath then he put the needle through. I felt it go through, but the little pressure barely even hurt. Today, it does have a tiny bit of red around it, but i believe that its because i sleep on my tummy. It doesn’t really hurt. Its a little sore if i bend or stretch though. I’d wash it twice day! I been doing once, but i think after reading a lot of sites, i’ll start washing twice a day.

Mine hasn’t bled at all. I am happy to say that sense i am squeamish to seeing blood.

Some say when they get their navel pierced that it hurts. personally… mine didnt. I am a sucker to pain, so me saying i barely felt it should make you want to get it! EVERYONE loves it, and i inspired some others to get it. If you want it, get it!

I got my navel pierced on New Years and it looks so good! such a cute piercing to get. I know for most, it doesn’t hurt but I actually fainted like, bam-on the floor but you know, whatev (: Its been great and I strongly suggest the salt water thing!

  3. Tiara says:

I got my tongue pierced about 6 months ago. I love it! It didn’t hurt when I got it done. The swelling took forever to go down. The swelling is what hurt. Icecream and ice was my diet for a couple days, but after 2weeks it was okay. The only problem was that I speak with a lisp now when it’s in. I don’t mind. It’s kinda sexy!! lol

  4. Chelsea says:

I just got my belly button pierced yesterday at Matthew’s Party & Tattoo. I was kind of scared at first but super excited. The only part that really hurt was the clamps…because they squeeze. The needle didn’t hurt like I thought…and I HATE NEEDLES!!! It’s a little sore when I bend over, especially after I clean it. But make sure you clean it 2 times a day and you’ll be perfectly fine. I haven’t touched it with my bare hands except for cleaning it. I absolutely love it…my dad doesn’t know :P

  5. Carolanne says:

Just got mine done for my 16th birthday, I went with my boyfriend. It was fun, it did not hurt but when they put the ring in it was a bit uncomfortable. I managed to get thru it. I dont want it to get infected tho, cause then ill have to take it out. So I was doing tthe sea salt water thing, but I just figured out I was doing it wrong. Ill be sure to do it right this up coming cleaning I have planned. I was just putting it in a bottle and squeezing down, but I have a shot glass so I will use that this time and put it over my belly button. Aww, I have wanted this done forever and now that I have it it is so very awsome, but I know I will soon become bored with it. I almost want to becaome bored with it, because then I know it is healed and then I do not have to worry about watching it avery day with nutiering care.

  6. Sammie says:

I got my naval pierced on 02/12/11. It hurt a little bit when clamped and actually pierced. A day later and it actually feels fine. No pus. No bleeding. I spray sea salt solution on it 4-6 times a day. I use h2ocean. ( which is what my piercer provided). I love my first body piercing ( besides my ears) and am taking great care of it. Don’t touch it with dirty hands and always listen to you piercer on times when to change it!!! The normal wait time they say is 6 weeks to change your jewlery

  7. JULIE says:

I freaking love it……….on my way there I had butterflies in my stomach. As I approached the the place my hands started sweating. When I got there I had a customer in front of me so I had to wait. But as i was looking at other people around me they made it seem as if it was painless. But I knew other wise because this is my first piercing ever, no tattoos either. When it was finally my turn my palms were still sweating I held my boyfriends hands because it was hurting and the whole time my eyes were close. The lady who was doing my piercing said that I had thick skin thats why I hurt as bad as it did. But other then that I loveeee it. Thinks baby : )

  8. Heather says:

  10. Linzy says:

So I got my belly button pierced almost 3 months ago and it’ll be fine for a week or two then it’ll start randomly bleeding and swell a little for a day or two… But I’m also very active I ride horses and dance…. Is this something I should be concerned about or is it normal??

  12. Abby says:

Okay, I’m sick of all these naval piercing stories… SOOO I’ll tell about my cartilage and septum piercings:] I did my own cartilage piercings ((yes, I did 2 right next to each other)) and I know it was super dumb for me to do it. But I love them<3 They look so amazing. But there is a problem. My ear is swollen really bad and it constantly hurts ); I only did them a few days ago and i constantly bitch about them. Of course not to my parents because they don't know ;p I keep using this sea water aftercare spray from hottopic and it doesn't really seem to be helping, but ya never know:] Next is my septum. I also did this one myself and there were no difficulties whatsoever:D I already gauged it from a 16G to 14G and they're soooo easy to hide! I love it so much<3 And it didn't hurt at all. The next piercing I want are spider bites:p

  13. Galen says:

I got my belly button peirced yesturday, and its sore. It hurt a lot but completly worth it. There is not puss, and only very light redness. Its a little itchy and does get sore when I bend. I am 16 and I adore this peircing. I would regret not getting it!

  14. amy says:

i had my navel pierced tday, and tbh it wasnt as bad as i thought, my friends say it wouldnt hurt but it did with me, everyone has a different way of pain so some people think it hurts while others dont, I only felt a sharp pinch and it was over in a few seconds, i have to admit it does sting alot now, but he’s given me some solution to clean it with twice a day, i think it looks awsome, so if your thinking of having it done then i highly recommend it, just remember to clean it and it should heal in no time :)

  15. Sandy says:

I’m 17 years old and I got my navel piercing almost two months now. I went with my best friend and I went first. There was no pain well just a little pinch and no blood at all. But after everything was done and it was my besties turn I almost blacked out! It was not new to me so I just did what I’m use to doing. My navel is lookinh good but I guess its red because of my light skin. I do cheer leading and I’m a flyer and I’ve never hurt it before. But I got a lil pain from it recently I guess its cause I didn’t soak it in salt water for 2 days but I still cleaned it. :) well its worth it so far even though no one in my house knows about it.

  16. Sour cesil says:

But now its kinda sore and it hurts just. Little bitt. But im cleaning it 2 times a day with alcohol. I think im going to try the sea salt water. Maybe it works more well.

  19. Hannah says:

I got my tongue done over 3 weeks ago, and had to take it out cause my mom found it. I just got it redone 3 days ago (: Its amazing! Try to avoid redoing tongues… Scar tissue piercings freacking hurt! I also got my belly button done (3 days ago) and its sore when bumped, other than that i love it. Although its still red around the piercing and i’m worried it will get infected, but I take really good care of my piercings, so i think its fine. I definintly recommend both for anyone who wants them done (: ♥

  22. Danielle ~Ellie~ says:

Hello. I got my belly done like a month ago. When i first got it i was nervous cause my mom made it sound worse but i still went and it didn’t hurt. I actually like needles. I donate blood also. But my belly is clean. I clean it twice a day and its very worth it. :D Those who want to get it and hear people say it hurts, don’t believe them. It really depends on how well you can take pain if you feel it or not. :)

  23. Torianna. :) says:

I’m only in 7th grade (I’m 12), and I’m getting my belly button pierced in two weeks. I’m so excited, but I’m scared! I don’t like needles, but I REALLY want this done, so I’m gonna have to manage.
I also feel like I’m out of shape. So I’m trying to get abs in two weeks so I won’t be embarrassed to show it off this summer.
The ring is chartreuse and the entire thing is plastic. I have a problem with metal, so the lady at Atlanta Body Jewelry told me I should get a plastic one.
    I CANNOT WAIT! :D DDD

  24. Kayla says:

I’m 17 & I got my belly button pierced on January 9th 2011, & it looks amazing! My mom took me with my best friend. I seriously didn’t feel a thing, the guy was all done & I didn’t even know it. It really doesn’t hurt. I haven’t changed it yet. My dad didn’t find out till last month. I recommend you get it done (:

  25. Melanie says:

I just got my belly button done yesterday for my 16th birthday and I absolutely loveeee it, to me it did hurt, but only a little, like the clamp didnt hurt for me, but it did pinch a little when, he put it through but it really hurt when he pulled the needle all the way through and put the ring in, I was holding my cousins hand and I squeezed his hand so hard that my rings left indents on his hand haha, but its well worth the pain, its not that bad, so if you wanna get it done, go for it, dont let the fear of pain hold you back b/c it only hurts for a few minutes after you get it done than it only hurts afterwards when cleaning it, go get it done, it will look cute(:

  26. MacKenzie says:

  28. katie Dafoe says:

i got my navel piercing last year july 13th as well as my nose the year before that. My nose felt like a bee sting compared to what my belly button felt like. I was nervous and excited. I got really scared when i was told that i had to wait. I had to wait fifteen minutes because the piercer was in with another client.
I was excited when the piercer was getting me ready. As soon as they put the clamps on i started hypervenilating. it hurt so bad. i am getting it changed soon as it has almost bben a year. I now have a nickle free ring as i am allerfic to nickle. i am going to get a plain barbell to start off with because i dont want it to break.
i would not recommend that anyone get their bellybutton pierced

  29. Laney Mendolle says:

I had wanted my bellybutton pierced for a few years now and on April 3rd my mom finally let me get it done! Honestly I was expecting it to hurt, but I didn’t flinch whatsoever. It didn’t hurt me whatsoever. But my best friend also got hers done and she almost cried. And my other friend got hers done and she said it only pinched a bit. It’s just different for everyone. Since it was only about a month ago it’s waaaay too early for me to change it, sadly. I’m such an impatient person I want to change it so bad, I almost decided to just do it the other day. But of course, wanting a new ring in there is a lot less important than ensuring that it heals properly! katie Dafoe said she wouldn’t recommend anyone getting their bellybutton pierced. I disagree, but I definitely wouldn’t recommend it for anyone who is not willing to clean it twice a day and take proper care for it! But if you’re responsible than I would definitely tell you to get it done! I actually love cleaning mine, it’s refreshing :) Good luck to anyone planning on getting their naval pierced!

  30. Karen says:

I had my navel pierced about 12 days ago! I am in my 50′s…. It hurt a little, but I really love the look. It was a hard pinch, then it was over. I purchased the H2 Ocean Spray which I use two time a day. Today I’m trying the Sea Salt in the Shot glass to see if there’s a difference. It’s a bit red around the area at the top. I wore a spandex that was tight on my stomach while exercising, BIG NO NO!!!! It pushed the ring into my stomach, not good… Hopefully in about two days it will be a lot better… I will be leaving the ring in for at least 6 months to make sure it’s totally healed… My sister and daughter both had theirs done at the same time as me and they also love theirs!!

  31. Alii says:

I got my lip pierced the day after my birthday last year, April 1st. I didn’t feel my lip at ALL, and I am absolutely in love with it! :) About two months ago, I decided to get “doubles” done on my ears, so I got a family friend to pierce my ear lobes, a little bit above the one that I already had on both my ears. The gun was extremely loud, and I think it was the shock that made my ears ring for awhile. I can honestly say, though, those two piercings HURT! On April 30th of this year, I got my belly button pierced. I went to the same place that I got my lip done, and when it first got pierced, I barely felt it. But now when I clean it with antibacterial soap, it pusses. Will using salt water stop this? Anyways, i love my belly button and even though it hurt for awhile afterwards, I’m so excited to change it! Definitely worth it :D I loooove all my piercings! i

  33. Lyndsea says:

I got my bellybutton done on May 17th, 2011 & my tongue done May 18th, 2011. I am VERY happy with both and if you are wondering to get yours done- go to Columbia Tattoo (if you’re in WA, Vancouver area.) Omar does great work! My tongue is hardly that swollen, and my belly button is doing awesome. I’m changing to the short bar in about 3 or 4 days cause the swelling has gone down a great bit. The highest point of my swelling was an hour after I got it done. My belly button, it’s great. No swelling. No pus. No nothing. (: Just be sure to wash the extra salt away after cleaning your bellybutton. I clean my tongue by rinsing with a 5% alcohol mouthwash and water, half mouthwash- half water in a shot glass. Swish it around, gargle, and let it sit so it can get on the ring as well.
If you’re in the Vancouver, WA area, go to Columbia Tattoo- I highly recommend Omar. (:

I’m so happy I got it done, it suites me so well, even my SEXY piercer said so, he said that I have a “rockin’ body” that made my day so much better ;)
I’m so happy I got it done !!!!!!!!!!

I got mine done today and I’m fourteen and I absolutly love it. I do cheerleading and I’m a flyer so im really skinny and my abs are really tight so when she went to put the clamp on it killed because it kept slipping off and she could not get enough skin. Also when she did pierce it because I had such tough muscle it killed because it was really hard to pierce. I hadnt ate yet so I almost fainted…chocolate cupcakes are my saviour <3 . Lol, it was read for about two hours and now it doesn't hurt at all. I got it done 11 hours ago :) .

I just got my belly pierced yesterday :D I’ve been wanting this for over a year and i finally convinced the parentals. But anyways i went to My Tattoo Shop in Hollywood, FL and they did a great job, everyone was nice. The process was quick and painless. I’m the biggest baby ever when it comes to pain and honestly i can say i didn’t feel it at all. You just lay down, they clean the area, run the needle through your skin (which felt like a little poke and thats it) put in the piercing and your done. My piercer didn’t use a clamp for idk what reason, just thought id announce that. It’s a little sore today but nothing major. It looks awesome too <3

I want to get my bellybutton pierced, I already have my nose pierced, an industrial bar in one ear, and both lobed pierced 4 times. plus, i have a tattoo. Healing time is the worst part of it all. you have to wait forever to be able to put in something pretty. Not many people have an industrial bar. I love it. I am totally addicted to getting pierced. I got my bellybutton pierced like a month ago, & the place did not use a clamp. Personally I thought the piercing did not hurt at all. I play basketball, & I always accidentally hit it so its a little red, & hurts a bit when i bend & of course hit it. I love the way it looks though, I cant wait to change it, & put cute dangly ones in it. I use the salt water soak 2-3 times a day for 5-15 minutes depending on how busy I am. I really hope it doesnt get infected so I dont have to take it out.

I’ll be 29 next month & I’m getting my belly button re-pierced tomorrow. I have 4 kids so I have some scars on my belly button. Plus my belly button is all ugly now. Other than that, I don’t look like I even had any kids, so it’ll be good! I want to make my belly button pretty again! SO excited!!!

Oh and angela.. I think it is. Try washing with anti bacterial soap and neosporine for a couple of days to avoid infection

    To Angela,
if the redness is always there and its been over a week since you had it and there is yellowish ooze or puss coming out, I am pretty sure it is. Don’t quote me, but that is what I have read and I recently got mine done too.

I got my bellybutton done July 10th, 2011 and I feel like just over the past three weeks it’s healing faster. It was the second time I got it done however. The first time, the piercer did it too deep (some do this to ensure it stays, but can reject too, which mine did) so the second time I went through a bit of scar tissue. That was a bit painful, but nothing too bad. For the first month I did a salt bath two or three times a day. I clean it regularly now, and do the occasional salt bath when I have time.
For those wondering about pain difference, I got my lip done in 2010 and it hurt two times as much as my bellybutton did. I’m not saying that getting my lip pierced hurt, but it was a bit more painful than my bellybutton. I also have two tattoos. One from 2010 slightly under my left boob and across my upper rib. And a new one from August 2011 on my upper right arm.
I love all of the modifications I’ve done to my body and couldn’t be happier with any of the results of them. Apart from my first bellybutton piercing.
